Student dormitory
The participants will be accommodated at the student dormitory of the University
of Zadar. Accommodation is in double and 4 beaded rooms. Each room has its
own lavatory and toilets. Alternate accommodation can also be arranged for
some of the participants.
Extra accommodation will be available in the same student house where the
participants will be accommodated. It will cost 20 DM per night, which doesn't
cover a meal. Any request for extra accommodation in the student house should
be forwarded to the Organising Committee at icps2000@hfd.hr.
There is also other accommodation, mostly private, since the hotels are normally
booked this time of the year. Croatian tourist offices in Zadar can handle
all such requests upon arrival. The prices for private accommodation range
from 20-60 DM per person per night, depending on the category.
Organiser can not guarantee that the conference fee will cover any special
requests and reserves the right to charge additional fee.

Local info
Zadar is a three thousand year old Croatian town on the Adriatic coast, which
has been the capital of Dalmatia for many centuries, and as such has been
the fountain of Croatian history and cultural and scientific heritage. Well
preserved monuments of spiritual and material culture speak of the town's
rich history, which can been seen in numerous cultural layers in the ancient
town centre fortified with thick walls: the ancient street gird of the town,
Roman forum dating back to the 1st century AD, ancient Croatian sacral monuments,
for example preromanic church of St. Donatus from 9th century, as well as
many romanic, gothic, renaissance and baroque churches and buildings.
Zadar (old town)

Its importance for Croatian culture can bee seen in following facts, showing
Zadar's legacy to Croatian science and literature: the first Croatian university
was founded in Zadar in 1396, the first Croatian novel was published in Zadar,
as well as the first newspaper in Croatian language...
It's precisely because of its cultural and political importance that Zadar
had been a target of various imperialistic tendencies many times during its
long history. Damages of the war of 1991 are still visible in Zadar and in
the surrounding villages.
Today the historical part of town (Poluotok) lives with full and modern
rhythm, and this combination of traditional values and modern ways of life
gives Zadar its special charm. One can hardly resist a long walk along Zadar's
waterfront to admire its beautiful sunset or to visit its rich and colourful
green fish markets, which are always bustling with life.
A street

Wider area of Zadar is strewn with national parks (Krka, Kornati, Paklenica).
The Zadar region offers over thousand kilometres of picturesque and unpolluted
coast with a necklace of over three hundred islands and islets, having many
peaceful unspoiled bays. To come to Zadar is to get to know not only the city
but also the scenery of the whole region, to see how it changes from soft
and mellow in the abundantly planted fields to harsh and rocky at the steep
slopes of the mountain Velebit, and from there to enjoy the birds-eye view
of the whole area.
Traditional Music
An opening ceremony will provide you an opportunity to hear Dalmatian (i.e.
coastal) traditional music. It is recognisable by its very original a cappella
performing practise, with a typical five-to-eight male ensemble called 'klapa'.
For more information about klapa's, including MP3's, see this link below.
